Gono Forum Leaders said that the government had failed to ensure the interest of famers as they were facing loss selling their paddy in the open market.
Gono Forum organised a press conference at the National Press Club on Wednesday where its president Dr Kamal Hossain said that the farmers were suffering for
wrong policy taken by the government.
He alleged the government had failed to buy paddy from the farmers directly. As a result, the farmers were compelled to sell their paddy in the open market at Tk.500 to 600 per maund, incurring loss as the production costs were higher, Kamal said.
Terming the Awami League government ‘undemocratic’, Kamal said the government had failed to accomplish its duty towards the citizen, particularly, the farmers.
He said the government had seized the voting rights of the people as they could not exercise voting power free and fairly. So, AL came to power violating the constitutional rights of the people, Kamal alleged.
He called upon all the political parties to unite for establishing a democratic government through a fresh general election.
Abu Sayeed, presidium member of the party, in his written speech raised four-point demand, including opening of government procurement centers at union level across the country for buying paddy from the farmers directly, reducing the costs of the
agricultural inputs, introduction of crop insurance and breaking the syndicate of the millers.
Gono Forum general secretary Reza Kibria, executive president Subrata Chowdhury, central leaders Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Mohsin Rashid and others attended the press conference.
