Rajshahi city residents on Monday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for realisation of their 7-point demands, especially taking effective steps to stop the Rajshahi prison authorities’ bid to grab char land in the Padma River.
The prison authorities have been trying to occupy 100 acres of Padma’s char land in the city’s Sreerampur area for building their Prisons Training Academy Complex.
They submitted the memorandum to the PM through Rajshahi additional deputy commissioner (general) Ruhul Amin on Monday noon.
Their other demands include: demolition of illegal infrastructures along the Padma River, keeping the area free from grabbers, afforestation on the river bank, and banning plying of vehicles on the river embankment.
They stated in the memorandum that the Rajshahi prison authorities had issued a notice for acquisition of 100 acres of land in the Padma River in the city’s Sreerampur area for building Prisons Training Academy Complex.
If this project was implemented, they said, there would be an obstruction in the direction of the river, adversely affecting the environment and weather of Rajshahi.
‘Changes in the navigability of the river can cause natural disasters like floods. City protection dams can also be damaged. It can also affect its aquatic habitat,’ they went on in the memorandum.
If the training complex was built inside the river, they also stated, public transportation could be interrupted due to security reasons and as a result, the Rajshahi people would be deprived of enjoying the natural beauty of the Rajshahi river while children would be deprived of sport places.
Socio-cultural organisation Swadhinata Charcha Kendra convener Mahfuzur Rahman Raj, joint convener Rezaul Karim Mohabbat, Rashahibasi convener Mahbub Tunku, member-secretary Nazmul Hossain Raju, Tarunyer Shakti member MA Malek Tuhin and Rajshahi Press Club general secretary Aslam-Ud-Doula were present while submitting the memorandum.
On Sunday three organisaitons – Rajshahibasi, Swadhinata Charcha Kendra, and Tarunyer Shakti – formed a human chain in front of the District Jail protesting against the Rajshahi prison authorities’ move to grab the char land.
