Freedom fighter and former Jatiya Sramik League general secretary Roy Ramesh Chandra died of heart attack at his Lalmatia residence in the city Wednesday morning.
The former member of the governing body of International Labour Organisation died at 68, family sources said.
Ramesh, also president of United Federation of Garment Workers, left behind his wife, a daughter and a son, his grandchildren and a host of relatives as well as admirers to mourn his death.
His body was kept in the BIRDEM hospital. He is expected to be cremated following the return of his wife and daughter on Friday, who are currently living in the United States, a member of Roy’s family told BSS.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of former general secretary of Jatiya Sramik League Roy Ramesh Chandra.
In a condolence message, the prime minister prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family, BSS added.
Jatiya Sramik League president Shukkur Mahmud and general secretary Sirajul Islam, in separate condolence messages, expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Ramesh Chandra.
Different labour rights bodies in separate press statements also expressed shock at the death of the labour leader.
Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad, Jatiya Sramik Federation, Jatiya Sramik Dhara leaders also expressed shock at the death of the labour leader.
