A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court sent Supreme Court lawyer Imtiaz Mahmud to jail on Wednesday in a case filed in Khagrachhari in 2017 under Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act on his arrest in the capital.
The Banani police arrested Imtiaz at his house Wednesday morning and produced before the tribunal in compliance with a warrant issued by the Khagrachhari Judicial Magistrate’s Court.
Metropolitan magistrate Saittabrata Shikder ordered Imtiaz to jail rejecting his petition for bail.
Defence counsel Robiul Islam argued that Imtiaz had obtained an anticipatory bail from the High Court till the submission of the charge sheet.
According to police investigators, the case was filed on July 21, 2017 with Khagrachhari police station for a post on Facebook page of Imtiaz on an issue of the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
‘The charge sheet was submitted on December 21, 2018 and the court recently issued the warrant for Imtiaz’s arrest,’ said Khagrachhari police station officer-in-charge Shahdat Hossain Titu.
According to the lawyer, complainant Shafiqul Islam said in his complaint that the accused posted on his Facebook page that hundreds of ‘settlers attacked Tripura tribal villagers’ and the ethnic minority people were fleeing their home.
The Communist Party of Bangladesh and Garments Sramik Trade Union Kendra, among others, protested at the arrest and demanded his release.
