Rights defender kept detained in Mymensingh

A human rights defender of Odhikar has been kept detained in police custody in Mymensingh since Saturday afternoon.
The rights defender, Md Abdul Kaium, who also edited online news portal Mymensinghlive, was arrested by the Detective Branch of police, said Trishal police station officer-in-charge Azizur Rahman, adding that a case was filed with the police against him under the Digital Security Act on Sunday.
Kaium’s fellow rights defenders in Dhaka said that the family alleged the police did not tell them why he was arrested.
‘Kaium was called by one Idris Ali, an influential madrassah teacher, for solving IT related problem and he was offered dollar instead of money for his work. When he was returning home, he was caught by DB men,’ said one of his fellows.
Another rights defender said that Kaium was arrested near Patgudam rail crossing area in the district headquarters at about 5:00pm on Saturday.
The Mymensingh police detective branch officer-in-charge Shah Kamal Akand said that Kaium was arrested on Saturday on charge of taking ‘bribe’ for sharing online content and would be produced before the court on Monday.
How he was kept detained without producing in court within 24 hours of the arrest, Shah Kamal said that the police informed the matter to the court on Sunday that he would be produced before the court on Monday.
