At least 33 people, including three police personnel, were injured and 17 buses and trucks were vandalised in clashes between two groups of transport workers on New Dhaka Road in Sirajganj town on Saturday.
Members of the Sirajganj Truck Sramik Union were in one group while members of Sirajganj Motor Sramik Union, mainly workers of buses, were on the other group.
Of the injured, Sirajganj Motor Sramik Union organising secretary Dulal Hossain Dulu, social welfare secretary Alam Hossain, Truck Sramik Union joint-general secretary Didar Alam, sports affairs secretary Jewel Rana and worker Manik were admitted to Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hosapital in the town.
Sirajganj sadar police station inspector (investigation) Rafiqul Ilsam and sub-inspectors Tariqul Ilsam and Abu Zafar were given first aid.
Witnesses said a truck worker slapped a rickshaw-puller as he was hit by the rickshaw and a bus worker protested at his rude behaviour at about 11:45am triggering an an altercation.
Being informed, the bus and truck workers, armed with brick bats and sticks, chased each other near the Truck Sramik Union office on New Dhaka Road of the town and locked in sporadic clashes at around noon.
Both the groups vandalised their rival’s vehicles.
Police rushed the spot and brought the situation under control at about 2:00pm by charging batons, firing tear gas shells and rubber bullets, said Sirajganj sadar police station inspector (investigation) Rafiqul Islam.
Sirajganj Motor Sramik Union general secretary Ansar Ali claimed that the truck workers attacked them first and vandalised two buses.
He claimed that at least 20 of their organisations were injured in the clashes.
The district Truck Sramik Union president Aslam Uddin, however, claimed that his 10 fellows were injured and 15 trucks were vandalised during the ‘attack’ by the bus workers.
