Two young artists Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury and Zihan Karim received Aminul Islam Young Artist Award 2018 at an awards programme held at Bengal Shilpalaya in Dhanmondi on Friday.
The award, named after artist Aminul Islam (1931-2011), was introduced by the family of the late artist in 2013.
Artist Aminul Islam was born on November 7, 1931. He was one of the forerunners of Bangladesh’s modern art movement in 1950s. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1981 and Independence Award in 1988 by the government of Bangladesh. He passed away on July 8, 2011.
Aminul Islam Young Artist Award, coordinated by Bengal Foundation, is handed over biennially.
The winners are selected after evaluation of the entries submitted by willing artists. Each winner receives Tk 1,00,000 as prize money.
Hundreds of artists applied for Aminul Islam Young Artist Award 2018. Ten artists were shortlisted including Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, Zihan Karim, Munem Wasif, M A Raihan, Palash Bhattacharya, Ritu Sattar, Sarkar Pratik, Sharad Das, Shoma Shurubhi Jannat and Sounak Das.
Art critic Professor Nazrul Islam, DU fine arts faculty drawing and painting department chairman Professor Shishir Bhattacharjee, artist Aminul Islam’s wife Rubi Islam and Bengal Foundation chairman Abul Khair were present as guests at the awards programme, which was conducted by Bengal Foundation director general Luva Nahid Choudhury.
