Three killed in ‘gunfight’

Three people were killed in two separate incidents of reported gunfights with law enforcers respectively in Cox’s Bazar and Kushtia districts on Friday, police said
Two men, in their thirties, were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Lemshikhali Darbar Ghat of Kutubdia in Cox’s Bazar in the early hours.
The deceased, Mahamudul Karim of village Chhaderkhola under Kutubdia and Md Quayum Kalu of village Moulvibazar under Pekua in Cox’s Bazar, were members of a robber gang, Kutubdia police station officer-in-charge Md Didarul Ferdous told New Age.
He added that a team of cops, acting on information that two groups of robbers got into a gunfight at Lemshikhali Darbar Ghat area, rushed to the spot at about 3:30am.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the suspected robbers opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate by firing, triggering the gunfight, he claimed.
Later, cops found the two persons shot and wounded and took them to the Kutubdia Upazila Health Complex where on duty doctors declared them dead, he said.
Police seized a gun and two cartridges from the spot and suspected that the two groups might have locked in gunfight over sharing the booty and establishing their control over the area.
A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Bhadalia Shawastipur area in Kushtia Sadar upazila on early Friday.
The deceased, identified as Rafiq Uddin, 35, son of Dawood Ali, a resident of village Baradi in the upazila, had several cases against him on reported charge of drug abuse and dealing, said Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kushtia police station.
He said that, acting on a tip off, a team of Kushtia and detective branch of police jointly conducted a drive in the area at about 3:00am while two groups of drug peddlers were exchanging bullets there.
Sensing the presence of the cops, the drug peddlers opened fired on police, forcing them to retaliate by firing that triggered the gunfight.
After the gunfight, police found Rafiq shot and wounded, and took him to Kushtia General Hospital where on duty doctors declared him dead, he said.
Police also seized a shooter gun, two cartridges, two magazines and 50 bottles of Phensedyl from the spot.
