All five Bangladeshi athletes failed to cross the first round in their respective events on the opening day of the 23rd Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar on Monday. In the 100m men’s race, country’s fastest man Mohammad Ismail finished dead-last of the second eight-man heat, with a timing of 11.17 seconds while Mohammad Hasan Miah finished the sprint in 10.86 seconds to finish seventh in the fifth heat. In the women’s 100m race, country’s fastest woman Shirin Akhter clocked in 12.72 seconds while Shohaghi Akhter finished the race in 12.78 seconds as both finished dead-last in their respective six-woman heats. Mohammad Jahir Rayhan was Bangladesh’s only participant in the men’s 400m race, who finished sixth in the seven-man first heat with a timing of 48.51 seconds, which was 1.65 seconds more than his record timing in the national championship. Bangladesh has one more event in the meet, the 200m women’s race, where Shirin will compete. — New Age
