Police detained a local leader of Awami League with a firearm near the party’s central office at Bangabandhu Avenue ahead of the AL central working committee and advisory council members’ meeting, where prime minister Sheikh Hasina was scheduled to attend.
The detainee is AL’s Dhaka South City’s ward no 49 unit president MA Mannan at Jatrabari area in the capital.
He was detained prior to the arrival of the prime minister at the meeting, police said. The PM arrived at the meeting about 4:30pm.
‘The Special Security Force detained Mannan carrying a pistol licensed under his name and handed him to us,’ Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Motijheel division additional deputy commissioner Shiblee Noman told New Age.
The DMP official said that they kept the AL leader under their custody for interrogation and would take steps as per direction of SSF.
He said that carrying firearms to VVIP programmes is prohibited.
