Two killed in ‘gunfights’

Two people were killed in two incidents of ‘gunfight’ in Gazipur and Bogura early Friday.
According to the the New Age correspondent in Gazipur, a suspected arms trader was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of the Rapid Action Battalion at Salna in the city.
He was identified as Habibur Rahman (Habi), 35, son of Haji Abdul Barek of Barbaika area in the city.
RAB-1 crimes prevention company commander Abdullah Al-Mamun said that a team of the elite force, acting on a tip-off, raided the area at about 2:30am.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, members of the illegal arms trader’s gang opened fire on them, prompting the RAB personnel to fire back triggering the gunfight, he said, adding that the arms trader became injured in the ‘gunfight’.
RAB seized a foreign-made pistol, a magazine and a bullet from the spot, he added.
The injured was immediately rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, the commander said.
The Bogura victim was Rashid Anam, 25, son of late Liakat Ali of Thanthania Shahidnagar in the district town. Rashid’s father was also killed in a ‘gunfight’ with law enforcers in 2004.
Rashid, named in at least seven cases, was killed in a gunfight between two rival groups in Dhundar Bridge area under Sadar upazila at about 1:30am, said Sanatan Chakraborty, additional superintendent of Bogura police.
On receiving information, a police team went to the spot and found Rashid with bullet injuries, he added.
He was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
‘Rashid was accused in several cases with different police stations,’ Sanatan added.
