A garment warehouse was burnt as fire broke out in a 10-storey building in Mirpur 14 area in the capital Sunday afternoon.
The fire broke out about 5:05pm on the fifth floor of the building at Kachukhet intersection of Mirpur and it came under control at about 7:25pm by the efforts of 15 fire fighting units, the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room officials said.
There was no casualty in the fire but a fireman, Md Ruhul Amin, was injured while fighting fire, they said.
The loss in the fire and its source could only be ascertained after investigation, the officials said.
Earlier, Fire Service and Civil Defence deputy director Dilip Kumar Ghosh visited the spot and told reporters that the warehouse had inflammable materials like fabric, chemicals and other garment accessories.
He said that the 10-storey building was constructed without following building code.
The fire broke out on the fifth floor of the building which houses a market, restaurant, office of the Dhaka North City Corporation ward councillor of reserved seat, warehouse and garment factory, locals said.
They said that as the day was a holiday, only a few security guards were in the building who managed to get down from the building immediately after it caught fire.
