The Election Commission on Monday announced the schedule for the maiden elections to newly formed Mymensingh City Corporation fixing the polling day on May 5.
The commission also decided to use Electronic Voting Machines in all polling centres.
The EC set April 8 as the last date for submitting nomination papers, April 10 for scrutinising the nomination papers and the April 17 as the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers by the aspirants.
EC secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed announced the schedule at a press conference at the commission’s media centre in the capital.
He said the EVMs would be used in the polls in all the 33 wards of the city.
The formation of the 12th city corporation was confirmed through a notice published on the Bangladesh Gazette on January 24 while formation of the city was declared by the government on October 14, 2018, he said.
He also said that it is legally binding that elections should be held by 180 days of the formation of a city corporation.
According to the local government division, the 900 square kilometre city was formed compressing Myemensingh town, Gohailjandi, Galaganda, Balashpur, Kashr, Bhatikashr, Sehra, Krishnapur, Kewatkhali, Chakcatrapur, Rakta, Dholadia, Masakanda, Boyra Bhaluka, Catrapur, Akua, Barera, Kalla, Charsehra, Hasikhali, Badeklpa, Baisakhai, Lhagdhar, Sutiakhali, Rahmatpur, Kismat, Beltali, Dapunia, Charishwardia, Gabindapur, Charghurampur and Jailkhanar char.
