Swadhinata Parishad, a panel contesting BGMEA elections, launched its 12-point election manifesto on Thursday promising revival of the image of the country’s readymade garment sector at home and in abroad through appointing lobbyist.
‘If we are voted to the office of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association we will develop a roadmap so that no entrepreneur in the sector would face dropout,’ Jahangir Alam, convener of Swadhinata Parishad, said while placing the manifesto at an exchange of views meeting at Dhaka Club.
Nabarun Apparels Ltd organised the meeting on the present condition and future goals of the country’s RMG sector.
In the manifesto Jahangir pledged development of new entrepreneurs for creating more employment in the country.
He said that Swadhinata Parishad would establish a research cell in BGMEA which would work on product diversification according to the ever changing global market and all the standing committees of the trade body would be made effective to serve the members.
If the panel was elected, it would take initiative to issue Utilisation Declaration through online and an app would be developed for subcontracting, Jahangir said.
He said that Swadhinata Parishad would take initiative to establish a unified code of conduct instead of separate compliance audit by buyers.
‘We will urge the government to provide 10 per cent cash incentive for the RMG sector,’ Jahangir said.
The elections for the board of directors of BGMEA would be held on April 6 in Dhaka as 44 candidates were contesting for 26 posts under two panels.
As per the negotiation two traditional panels — Sammilita Parishad and Forum — collectively submitted nominations for 26 posts while the third panel, Swadhinata Parishad, submitted nominations for 18 posts.
Nine directors from Chattogram zone were elected unopposed from the joint panel of Sammilita Parishad and Forum.
Mohammadi Group chairman Rubana Huq is leading the joint panel and she is supposed to be the next president of the BGMEA if the majority of her panel is voted in the elections.
‘It is our primary victory that elections for the director posts are going to be held. We are not worried about winning or losing posts as we think the leadership should be elected through direct vote,’ said Jahangir Alam the convener of Swadhinata Parishad.
