Drug peddler suspect killed in Cumilla ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler died in a reported gunfight with police at Dhanpur in Cumilla Sadar Dakkhin early Thursday.

The deceased was Jamal Haq alias Jambu Mia, son of Hares Mia of Joynagar village in the upazila.

On a tip-off that a group of drug peddlers gathered in the area, a team of police raided there, said Mamun-or-Rashid, officer-in-charge of Sadar Dakkhin model police station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire, forcing them to fire back in self-defence, leaving Jamal injured with bullets while the others managed to flee the scene.

Later, he was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Jamal was wanted in 13 several cases, said the OC.

Meanwhile, police seized 30kg of hemp and 2,000 Yaba pills from the spot.
