The National Board of Revenue on Wednesday sent an assistant revenue officer (ARO) to compulsory retirement for stealing gold bar and gold ornaments from Dhaka customs warehouse and dismissed two others from service for involvement in corruption.
The revenue board on the day issued three separate orders signed by its chairman Md Nojibur Rahman in this connection.
According to an order, ARO Mojibur Rahman in 2010 when he was warehouse officer at the then Zia International Airport stole gold bars, chain and other ornaments from the warehouse.
The NBR sent him to compulsory retirement after getting approval of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission and following all legal procedures.
On the other hand, ARO GM Shahjahan and ARO Golamur Rahman were caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Commission while taking bribe worth Tk 60,000 each in November 2008 from customs, excise and VAT divisional office in Feni.
Both were dismissed from the service as the NBR found the allegation true.
Recently, the revenue board intensified its efforts to punish its corrupt officials for involvement in corruption, harassment of taxpayers and other misconduct.
Earlier in December last year, the NBR downgraded the posts of income tax commissioner Animesh Roy, additional income tax commissioner Riazul Islam and deputy income tax commissioner Amirul Karim Munshi for corruption and irregularities in recruitment of class III and class IV employees at Rangpur Income Tax Zone.
