Trader beaten by BCL leaders dies in Jashore hospital

A young trader in his twenties died in a Jashore hospital on Thursday evening a day after he was violently beaten by the district Chhatra League general secretary and his accomplices, confirmed police.
Victim Nayan Chowdhury, owner of Bhai Bhai Welding shop at Talikhola of Puratan Kashba in Jashore town, died at about 7:00pm on Thursday.
Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Apurba Hasan said the general secretary of Jashore district unit Bangladesh Chhatra League, Salsabil Ahmed Jisan and his accomplices beat Nayan Chowdhury at 11:00pm on Wednesday as the trader refused to pay that much extortion demanded by the leader.
He also confirmed that Jisan and his group are involved with extortion at Chudanga Bus Stand area in the Jessore town.
Raton Chowdhury, brother of the victim, said his brother died at the hospital while undergoing treatment.
Nayan was beaten up by Salsabil Ahmed Jisan and his followers as he refused to pay Tk 2 lakh as demanded by the hooligans.
Salsabil Ahmed Jisan could not be reached over phone for comment.
Rausnak Iqbal Shahi, president of Jashore district unit BCL, however, told journalists that Jisan was not in Jashore when the incident took place.
Apurba Hasan, officer in-charge of Kotwali police station, said that a case was lodged with the Kotwali police accusing four people, but none was arrested in this connection.
