Islami Andolan Bangladesh amir Syed Mohammad Rezaul Karim on Friday alleged that March 11 controversial elections to Dhaka University Central Students’ Union made Bangladesh’s educational arena controversial.
He made the remarks pointing finger at the Dhaka University authorities and the incumbent government while addressing Jatiya Sramik Convention of the IAB’s workers front at Suhradardy Udyan in Dhaka city.
Leaders and activists of Islami Andolan and its front and associate organisations gathered at the daylong convention.
Rezaul Karim was critical of those who objected to chanting ‘Allahhu Akbar’ slogan on the university campus during the DUCSU polls held after about 28 years.
The Islamist leader, known as Pir Shaheb Charmonai, said the national elections of December 30 were also controversial.
He said the chief election commissioner’s recent statement proved that the ballot boxes were stuffed the night before the polling day.
On March 8, chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda said that the commission was planning to use electronic voting machines to make sure that ballot was not stuffed on the night before an election.
The Islami Andolan top leader came down hard on Bangladesh Workers Party president Rashed Khan Mennon saying that the left leader disgraced the parliament by speaking against Islam and Islamic scholars inside the parliament as the session began with Bismillahhir Rahmanir Rahim.
The national workers convention adopted a 19-point resolution read out by Islami Sramik Andolan president Mohammad Ashraf Ali Akon who also presided over the inaugural session.
The resolutions included implementation of Islami labour policy, recognising workers as honourable citizen by the state, introducing ration for all workers, fixing Tk 16,000 minimum wage for all workers, withdrawal of cases against farmers, stopping eviction of hawkers from footpath and allowing them on one-third of the footpaths.
Islami Andolan amir announced the partial new committee of Islami Sramik Andolan.
Leaders of Islami Andolan and Sramik Andolan Yunus Ahmed, ATM Hemayet Udidn, Abdul Wadud, Atiur Rahman Nannu Munshi, Abu Musa Nesari, Jamal Uddin, among others, addressed the convention.
