Noted artist Mustafa Monwar received Sultan Padak 2018 on the concluding day of the ten-day Sultan Mela on Tuesday in Narail Sadar.
State minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid handed over the award-comprising a gold medal and certificate-to artist Mustafa Monwar, who received the award for his contribution to the country’s art scene.
Mustafa Monowar was born in 1935. After obtaining a first-class-first degree from Kolkata Government College of Arts and Crafts, he commenced his career as a lecturer at the then Government Art College (now Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University).
After a short stint as a lecturer, he joined Bangladesh Television in 1964 as a programme producer. In 1971, Mustafa Monowar led the cultural personalities to help the cause of liberation war.
In his illustrious career, Monowar has worked as the deputy director general of Bangladesh Television, director general of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, director general of Film Development Corporation, and director general of National Press Institute.
Previous recipients of SM Sultan Padak include Ferdousi Priyabhashini, Hashem Khan, Abdul Mannan, Kalidas Karmakar, Hamiduzzaman Khan, Samarjit Roy Chowdhury, Rafiqun Nabi, Murtaja Baseer and others.
The ten-day Sultan Mela was jointly organised by Narail district administration and SM Sultan Foundation marking artist SM Sultan’s 94th birth anniversary, which was observed on August 10, 2018, in association with the cultural affairs ministry and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
The fair, which began on March 3, featured art exhibition, drawing competition, tricks with sticks, horse racing, discussion on Sultan’s life and works and others.
