Garment traders, boat owners and workers demonstrated at Kaliganj Gudaraghat on Tuesday morning against a BIWTA decision to relocate nine boat crossing terminals from the Sadar Launch Terminal.
AKM Arif, port officer of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, said that there were nine terminals from Telghat to Babubazar Bridge for boat crossing.
‘BIWTA decided to relocate the terminals to Nawabbari area to avoid accidents,’ he said.
The protesters staged demonstrations in Dakkhin Keraniganj at about 11:00am.
During the protests, there was huge pressure on Nagorma-hal and its adjoining terminals. A boat sank after being hit by a patrol speedboat of the BIWTA port officer, witnesses said.
No casualty was reported in the incident.
Aziz Sheikh, president of the Keraniganj Garments and Shop Owners’ Association, said that they were protesting against the association’s decision.
