Bangladesh Under-16 women’s football team qualified for the finals of the AFC Under-16 Women’s Championship when they beat Myanmar by a solitary goal in their qualifying Round-2 Group B second match in Mandalay on Friday.
Midfielder Monika Chakma scored the all-important goal in the second half to guide her team to back-to-back finals of the tournament.
Bangladesh, who began their campaign with a crushing 10-0 win against Philippines, needed just a win from their next two matches to qualify for the final round of the championship, scheduled to be held in Thailand in September-October this year.
The game remained goalless in the first half despite the Golam Rabbani Choton charges pressing hard from the very first of the game.
Bangladesh began the second half in the same attacking mood and took the lead in the 68th minute when Monika’s corner from the right side slipped through the gloves of Myanmar keeper Khin Myat Moe and entered the net.
China also confirmed their berth in the finals when they thrashed Philippines 7-0 in the other Group B match of the day. Earlier, China beat hosts Mayanmar 5-0 in their opening match.
Now the final group match on Sunday between Bangladesh and China will decide who would finish as champions and runners-up from the group.
Earlier, Bangladesh qualified for the Qualifiers Round-2 after emerging unbeaten Group F champions in Qualifiers round-1 at home in September 2018.
Bangladesh coach Rabbani heaped praises of his charges for qualifying for the finals of the championship for the second time in a row.
‘I am very happy that we fulfilled our target and reached the final round for the second time in a row,’ Rabbani was quoted as saying by a Bangladesh Football Federation press release.
‘I’m also very satisfied with the performance of my charges.’
The scorer of the only goal Monika Chakma was also ecstatic after propelling her team to back-to-back finals.
‘I am very happy for scoring the lone goal and guiding my team to the final round in Thailand,’ said Monika.
