Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority on Tuesday started the third phase of eviction drives at Shahidnagar in the capital’s Kamrangirchar to demolish illegal establishments along the Buriganga River.

The drive started in Kamrangirchar at around 9:00am will be continued till 5:00pm, said BIWTA sources.

Chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority commodore Mohammad Mozammel Haque said BIWTA would not favour any powerful quarter during the eviction drive.

BIWTA earlier identified 906 illegal establishments, including 56 multi-storey buildings, on the banks of the Buriganga stretching from Sadarghat to Gabtoli.

High Court had directed the government on June 6, 2009 to save Dhaka’s rivers from the grabbers.

Another High Court bench on February 2, 2019 issued an order disqualifying river encroachers from contesting any polls and getting any bank loans.
