A 35-year-old woman was killed and her mother-in-law injured critically as the deceased’s brother-in-law hacked the two women with a machete at their rented residence at TIC Colony area under Dakshinkhan Police Station Monday afternoon.
The deceased was Sharmin Akhter, 35, wife of Md Biplab of TIC Colony.
Her mother-in-law Hamida Begum, 60, is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Locals who rushed to DMCH said Shafiqul Islam, 38, came back from Saudi Arabia about one and a half months ago and locked in an altercation with his mother Hamida on the day over money he had sent from overseas.
At one stage, they said, Shariful brought a machete from his room and hacked his mother in the belly.
They said, Hamida’s daughter-in-law Sharmin tried to stop him from making any further assaults on his mother and cried out for help when Shariful also hacked Sharmin and fled the scene, leaving the duo critically injured at about 5:30pm.
When the duo was taken to a hospital at Tongi, doctors declared Sharmin dead and sent Hamida to DMCH, they said.
DMCH police outpost in-charge Bachchu Mia said Hamida was brought to the hospital in a senseless state at about 9:30pm.
Dakshinkhan police station officer-in-charge Tapan Chandra Saha said they were trying to nab Shariful.
