A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between two groups of drug dealers at Rautha village under Charghat upazila in Rajshahi pm early Monday raising the death toll to 211 in the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drives since May 15, 2018.
The deceased, Fazlul Haque, 48, of the village was accused in at least 10 drug related cases, police said.
Rajshahi district police spokesperson and senior assistant superintendent Abdur Razzak Khan told New Age that a team from Charghat police station went to the spot on information that two groups of drug dealers got into a gunfight near a mango orchard in the village.
As the drug traders, sensing the presence of law enforcers, started shooting the cops, they retaliated by shooting blank.
After 10 shots, drug dealers fled the spot and police found Fazlul shot.
They took Fazlul to Rajshahi Medical Collage Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Abdur Razzak Khan claimed that at least four policemen including officer-in-charge of Charghat police station Nazrul Islam received injuries, adding that they seized a foreign pistol, a magazine, a cartridge and 55 bottles Indian Phensedyl from the spot.
