All the five deceased in Sunday night’s road accident on Rupsha Bypass Road at Labonchora in Khulna were identified as Gopalganj based leaders of ruling Awami League-backed student wing Bangladesh Chattra League and youth wing Juba League, police said.
They said that four of them were BCL leaders while the other was a leader of Gopalganj Sadar upazila unit of JL.
The deceased are Gopalganj district BCL organising secretary Mahbub Hasan Babu, 26, son of Abdul Wadud Mia of Sabujbagh area, assistant secretary Saju Ahmed, 24, son of Alamgir Hossain of Gatepara, stipend affairs secretary Alid Mahmud Uyutsa, 24, son of Gazi Mizanur Rahman Hitu of Thanarpara, Gopalganj Sadar upazila BCL health affairs secretary Animul Gazi, 24, son of Ohid Gazi of Chandmari area and Sadar thana Juba League vice-president Md Sadiqul Alam Sadiq, 32, son of late Alauddin Shikder of Sabujbagh area in Gopalganj town, said Labanchara police station officer-in-charge Shafiquel Islam.
All the four BCL leaders were students of Gopalganj Government Bangabandhu College, the college officials said.
Labanchara OC said that the accident took place at about 10:30pm when the Rupsha-bound private car carrying the five and a Sonadanga-bound cement-laden truck collided head-on leaving all the five of the private car dead on the spot.
Quoting witnesses, he said that the accident took place when a mentally challenged pedestrian suddenly jumped in front of the car when it was about to drive past him. The driver of the private car hit the truck head-on trying to save him.
The police officer said that their bodies were sent to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital Morgue on early Monday from where their bodies were handed over to their family members in the morning.
New Age Correspondent in Gopalganj, quoting police, reported that the five went to visit Khulna by Sadiq’s newly bought private car and Sadiq himself had been driving the car.
They were buried in two graveyards after their janaza at Sheikh Fazlul Huq Moni Stadium in the town at 2:15pm when several thousand people participated.
Besides, district units of Awami League, BCL and JL will organise a prayer session at district AL office in the district town on Tuesday for eternal peace of their departed souls.
Another prayer session will be held at Gopalganj Government Bangabandhu College as four of the victims were students of the college.
