A journalist died reportedly of excessive alcohol consumption in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi.
The deceased was Selim Ahmed Bhandari, 34, resident of village Monigram in the upazila.
Selim was the Bagha upazila correspondent of local daily the Dainik Rajshahi Sangband and national daily the Dainik Jaijaidin.
He was also the office secretary of the Bagha Press Club and vice-president of the Bagha Jatiya Sangbadik Sangstha.
Officer-in-charge of Bagha police station Mohammad Mohsin Ali said that he was informed Selim had consumed excessive liquor on Wednesday night and fell sick.
He was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where he died on Thursday night, he said.
The police sent the body to the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
The officer-in-charge also said that they detained local homeopathic practitioner Masidul Karim, who allegedly sold spirit to Selim, also office secretary of Bagha Press Club and vice-president of Bagha Jatiya Sangbadik Sangstha, for interrogation.
Meanwhile, victim’s wife Sonia Akhter alleged that Masudul killed Selim in a planned way after feeding him drinks laced with alcohol.
