Rape suspect killed in Ctg ‘gunfight’

A rape suspect was reportedly killed in a gunfight with police at Fishery Ghat area in Chattogram on Tuesday.
Shahabuddin, in his twenties, and his accomplices were allegedly involved in a gang rape incident, said Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Mohsin.
He said Shahabuddin in profession was a driver. He and his accomplices allegedly picked up an 18-year-old madrassah student from Khaled Road in the port city, raped her and dropping her on the road.
OC said that on January 27 when the gang again called the girl and asked her to meet them, the girl and her father went to the police and lodged a complaint.
Police launched an investigation and arrested accused Shyamol Dey, of the same gang, who gave them information about Shahabuddin.
Later police conducted a drive on Tuesday near Fishery Ghat area, where Shahabuddin and his cohorts were holed up, said Mohammad Kamruzzaman, inspector (investigation) of the case.
Sensing the presence of police, the suspects opened fire on police, who retaliated by firing shots against the attackers.
Shahabuddin was shot and killed during the gunfight. Three police men were also injured in the incident.
