A local leader of Swechchhasebak League, ruling Awami League-backed volunteer organisation, was arrested in Sylhet on Tuesday in a case filed for taking money from a person as extortion.
The arrested was identified as Pijosh Kanti Dey, senior vice-president of Sylhet district unit of Swechchhasebak League, the police said.
The Kotwali police officer-in-charge, Mohammad Selim Miah, told New Age that they arrested Pijosh raiding his residence in Kuarpar area in the city in the afternoon.
‘The arrested was produced before the chief metropolitan magistrate court in the afternoon and the court ordered the police to send him to jail,’ the police officer said.
Pijosh was accused in several cases filed with the different police stations in the city in connection with incidents of extortion, snatching and kidnapping, the OC added.
