Five held for running fake social media accounts of PM, family

A team of Rapid Action Battalion 2 has arrested five suspected cyber criminals on charge of spreading rumour about prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members.

They used fake social media profiles in the name of the prime minister, her family members and other national leaders to extort money and spread rumour.

The arrestees are Md Omar Faruque, 30, of Akhsarchar in Magura, Sabbir Hossain, 24, of Barishal, Al-Amin, 27 of Dhaka’s Demra, Md Aminul Islam Amin, 25, of Mahishapota in Banaripara of Barishal, and Md Manir Hossain, 29, of Bhawal Monharia in Keraniganj of Dhaka.

The arrestees had been collecting money and cheating people using fake Facebook identities.

The release also said that they also had been using social media to tarnish the image of the government and to create chaos in the country, breaching the Digital Security Act.
