Journalists, politicians and rights activists in Dhaka and Khulna on Tuesday demanded that the government should reinvestigate the case filed in connection with the killing of Khulna-based journalist Manik Saha, arrest the culprits and ensure exemplary punishment for them.
They made the demand while addressing different programmes, organised marking the 15th death anniversary of Manik, who died in a bomb attack at Chhota Mirzapur near Khulna Press Club in the city on January 15 in 2004.
They said that the government would have to ensure trial of the culprits to ensure safety of journalist community and freedom of press.
The Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal judge, MA Rab Hawlader, who sentenced nine people to life term imprisonment on November 30 in 2016 for killing Manik, observed that the previous investigation was not strong enough to ensure capital punishment for the offenders and there was lack of proper evidence.
Manik Shaha was a senior correspondent of the New Age; he was also Khulna chapter president of Amnesty International and president of Khulna Press Club.
In Dhaka, people from different walks of life formed a human chain under the banner of Sangbadik Manik Shaha Hatyar Bicharprarthi Sangkhubdha Sangbadik Samaj, in front of the National Press Club.
Moderated by ptbnews.com editor Ashis Kumar Dey, the human chain was addressed, among others, by Communist Party of Bangladesh president Mujahidul Islam Selim, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists president Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, CPB leader Ruhin Hossain Prince, rights activist Jalal Uddin, advocate Hasan Tarique Chowdhury, and journalists Nikhil Bhadra, Sakila Parveen Ruma and Rafiqul Islam Sabuj.
New Age correspondent in Khulna reported that Khulna Press Club and Khulna Union of Journalists held separate discussion programmes at the press club marking the day and alleged that the state failed to identify and punish the real culprits who were involved in the killing.
Khulna units of CPB and Bangladesh Chhatra Union brought out separate processions in the city demanding of justice for Manik.
Manik’s family members, Khulna Press Club, Khulna Union of Journalists, Manik Saha Smriti Parishad, Ratan Sen Public Library, Khulna units of CPB, Chattra Union and Udichi Shilpi Gosthi placed wreaths at the memorial of the slain journalists on Khulna Press Club premises.
