Minister calls for land officials’ wealth report by Feb 28

Land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury on Saturday asked land officials of all levels to submit their wealth statements to the ministry by February 28.
At a meeting to exchange views with journalist at Chattogram Press Club, he said that the ministry took the move aiming to end corruption in the land offices.
The minister said that the government was going to bring all land offices, including thana and upazila land offices, under constant surveillance setting up closed-circuit television cameras there. The land minister and secretary would monitor the activists at the offices through an app, he said.
Even voice recording devices would also be installed at land offices to curb corruption, he added.

He said that once upon time the land ministry was a dumping station where corrupt and inefficient officials were dumped. But in reality it is a very important ministry, he said.
Saifuzzaman said that people would get desired services from the ministry gradually and the field level land offices would be brought under automation to reduce harassment and in five years it would become a successful ministry.
He said that compensation for acquired land would be handed over to the families by deputy commissioners to curb corruption.
The minister also promised to allocate money for the eviction of illegal occupants near the River Karnaphuli to save the river from encroachment.
Chattogram Press Club president Kalim Sarwar, general secretary Suklal Das, Chattogram Union of Journalist president Nazimuddin Shyamol and general secretary Hasan Ferdous, among others, also spoke.
