At least one person was killed and more than 10 others were injured in a clash between two groups of construction labourers in Moulvibazar on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Munibjit Rabidas, 58, of Dewchhara Tea Garden, at Shamshernagar under Kamalganj upazila in the district, police said.
Local residents said Munibjit had been working for several weeks as an assistant of his neighbour Gariba Rabidas, who is a mason and was engaged in the construction of a building in the area.
Around 10:00am, Munibjit was locked into an altercation with Gariba as he (Gariba) appointed another man as his assistant in the job by replacing Munibjit, they said.
At one stage when the two were exchanging heated words, family members and relatives of Munibjit and Gariba got into a fight. Since they were armed with locally made weapons, including bamboo sticks and spears, the clash left more than 11 people of both families injured, the locals said.
They said that the neighbours sent seven seriously injured, including Munibjit, to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital after the clash, but Munibjit died on his way to the hospital.
Rest of the injured were given first aid from the local dispensaries, they added.
Kamalganj police officer-in-charge Arifur Rahman said that they inspected the spot immediately after receiving the news of the clash.
‘Two people — Satya Narayan and Sagar Rabidas — were detained from the spot for their suspected involvement with the murder,’ the police officer said, adding that the victim’s body was sent to the Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination.
‘We are preparing to file a case in this regard,’ the police officer informed when the report was being penned around 8:00pm.
