Senior theatre activist and social worker Zahir Khan Layek died on Friday morning in Sylhet. He was 65.
Layek went to bed with a sound physical condition on Thursday night at his Fajilchist residence, his relatives said. He felt a pain in his chest immediately after he woke up around 7:15am and breathed his last at 7:45am, they said.
Layek, who was known for his cheerful demeanor to his colleagues and fans, was a founder member of Kathakali Sylhet, a popular theatre troupe in the region and was involved with organizational works until his death.
He was also the president of Shubhechchha Samaj Kalyan Sangha, a social welfare organisation of Subidbazar area in the city.
Layek is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son.
Leaders and activists of different socio-cultural organisations have expressed their shock at the death of the senior cultural activist Layek and prayed for the eternal piece of his departed soul.
The time and venue for his namaz-e-janaza would soon be set, the family sources said in the afternoon.
