‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with police

A suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Gajaria area of Bajitpur in Kishoreganj early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Ashraf Uddin, 30, son of Bachchu Mia, from Bhairab upazila’s Manikdi area.
Bajitpur circle additional superintendent of police Aminur Rahman said acting on a tip-off that a robber gang preparing to commit robbery in the area, a police team led by him conducted a drive in Gajaria area of Bajitpur at about 1:30am.
Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire on police, prompting police to retaliate with gunfire that created a gunfight between police and robbers, Aminur claimed.
At one point, when the villagers came in, the police stopped firing gunshots and the robbers fled, he said.
Later, police spotted the bullet-hit body of Ashraf and rushed him to Bajitpur Upazila Health Complex, where duty doctors declared him dead, the police officer said.
He said police recovered a shotgun, five bullets, two sharp weapons, 15 bottles of Phensedyl and 100 pieces of meth from the spot.
Aminur said four police personnel were also injured in the incident. He said Ashraf was accused in several cases with Bhairab and Narsingdi Police Stations.
