Election Commissioner Shahadat  Hossain Chowdhury said the Armed Forces will act only when the regular law enforcement agencies will fail to bring any untoward situation under control during the December 30 general election.

‘There are police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh to maintain the law and order. The Armed Forces will intervene in those places where Police, RAB and BGB fail. The Armed Forces are our last resort,’ he said addressing a news conference at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital.

He said the troops now were deployed in the election duty not as a ‘striking force’ and they will act if other law enforcement agencies fail to bring the situation under control.

Shahadat said that the situation fully remains under the control of the commission, he said adding that more than five lakh law enforcers have been deployed in the countrywide election.

He said that the Armed Forces will work in line with the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898.
