11 killed in Gopalganj road accident

At least 11 people were killed and 20 others injured as a bus and a human hauler collided head-on on Dhaka-Khulna highway at Haridaspur under Gopalganj Sadar upazila Thursday afternoon.
Ten of the deceased were identified as Saddam Hossain, 25, of village Nimtala, Rajib Molla, 22, of village Battala, Jaglul Shikder, 35, of village Chandradighalia, Nayan Sheikh, 11, and his sister Moriom, 8, of village Sultanshahi, Kashem Sheikh, 37, and Abu Bokkor Sheikh, 33, of Tebaria, Morshed Gazi, 55, of village Dumdia, all under Gopalganj Sadar upazila, Renu Begum, 45, and her daughter Meghla, 9, of Tekerhat in Madaripur. The identity of the remaining one could not be known until 11:00pm.
Gopalganj fire service officials, referring to primary report, said that the 11 deceased, including eight men, two women and a minor boy, were passengers of the human hauler.
Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, told New Age that the accident took place when a Khulna-bound bus of Golden Line Paribahan from Dhaka collided head-on with the human hauler at about 5:45pm at Haridaspur, leaving at least 10 people spot dead and some others injured.
He said that locals, hearing the big bang of the collision and cries of the affected passengers, rushed to the spot and began to rescue the injured people alongside the police.
The OC said that the fire service men also rushed to the spot and began their rescue operation along with the police and locals.
Fire service inspector Rubel Sheikh at Gopalganj said that they found 11 people dead on the spot and several others injured.
He said that some of the injured were sent to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital by their vehicles while some others were taken to the hospital by the locals.
The fire service official said that both the human hauler and the bus were badly smashed and fell into a roadside ditch.
Officials at the fire service said that at least 20 people were injured in the accident.
