Internationally acclaimed artist Monirul Islam has received Royal Spanish Order of Merit.
Spanish ambassador in Dhaka Alvaro de Salas conferred the honour on Monirul Islam in presence of cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor on Sunday at a ceremony held at the ambassador’s residence.
‘This honour is indeed a great recognition and a matter of great pride for Bangladesh. Monirul Islam has familirised art lovers across the world with our art and culture and put Bangladesh on the global art map through his works,’ said Asaduzzaman Noor.
‘It is a great thing, indeed, to be recognised for my work. I am happy because these days my works are being recognised not only in Bangladesh and Spain but also elsewhere. So I am slowly getting closer to my destination. I always depict human emotions and nature through my work and I enjoy doing it,’ said Monirul Islam after receiving the honour.
The artist, who divides his time between Bangladesh and Spain, earlier won National Award of Spain in 1993 and The Cross of Officer of the Order of Queen Isabella in 2009. Besides, the Bangladesh government honoured him with Ekushey Padak in 1999.
