Bangladesh Nationalist Party nominated candidate for Sylhet 6 (Golapganj-Beanibazar) constituency Faysal Ahmad Chowdhury on Monday complained against arrests and intimidation by police ahead of the lections
Addressing a news conference at a Sylhet hotel in the afternoon, Faysal said police started arresting BNP leaders and activists ahead of the elections to create panic among the activists as well as common voters.
The law enforcers were also conducting rampant drives in the homes of local leaders of the BNP and its front organisations in every night without any specific allegation and threatened them with dire consequence if they did not leave the area immediately and stay outside the area till the voting day, he complained.
He claimed that Ashfaq Ahmad Chowdhury, chairman of the sadar union council of Golapganj upazila and a BNP leader, was arrested by a team of detective branch on Monday morning while he was going to attend with him (Faysal) to the district returning officer’s office to receive the election symbol of his party.
The Golapganj police picked up Mahbubur Rahman, chairman of Fulbari union of the same upazila and a party leader, in the afternoon as a bid to foil his election campaign supposed to be held in the evening by the union chairman in his area, Faysal claimed.
He alleged that the upazila’s Budhbari Bazar union BNP general secretary was also arrested in the afternoon and Shahab Uddin, president of the upazila’s Badepasha union Juba Dal, was arrested on Sunday night.
Claiming that cops with an intention of harassing BNP leaders and activists as well as to interrupt his election campaign, Faysal said, ‘Cops are acting in such a way to favour education minister Nurul Islam Nahid.’
He said the returning officer would be responsible for all kinds of untoward consequences if all leaders and activists of the BNP-led alliance Jatiya Oikya Front were not released immediately and a level playing field for the candidates was not ensured. When contacted, Golapganj police officer-in-charge AKM Fazlul Haque Shibli confirmed New Age of the arrests of BNP leaders and said they were accused in different cases.
