Nation will recall the memory of Bir Shreshtha Ruhul Amin, one of the seven liberation war heroes, on his 45th death anniversary today.
On this day in 1971, six days before achieving victory, engine room artificer of Bangladesh Naval Ship Palash, Ruhul Amin embraced martyrdom on the banks of River Rupsha after he swam ashore from the ship.
The BNS Palash had earlier captured Mongla Port from the Pakistani occupation forces after a fierce gun battle.
The Palash was advancing towards Khulna to conquer the industrial city from the occupation forces.
As the ship neared the Shipyard area, a fighter plane hurled bombs at BNS Palash. Mohibullah Bir Bikrom, a member of the ship staff was killed on the spot and remaining members of the staff jumped into the River Rupsha.
Ruhul Amin managed to escape the bomb attack but was later killed by the Razakar Bahini on swimming ashore.
Ruhul Amin and Mohibullah were buried at village Bagmara under East Rupsha area in the district on the next day.
The Khulna Development Authority had built a memorial complex surrounding their graveyards in 1997.
The Bangladesh Navy supervised the complex after it was handed over to it by the Khulna Development Authority on completion.
The Khulna navy headquarters had chalked out different programmes to observe the 47th death anniversary of the two war heroes in a befitting manner.
The programmes would include placing wreaths at their graveyards, discussions, prayer sessions and recitation from the Holy Quran.
The Rupsha Press Club also will observe the death anniversaries of the two great heroes of the liberation war.
