Two killed as fire razes 15 shops in Shariatpur

At least two people died and 20 others were injured as a devastating fire razed more than 15 shops and two houses at Palong Bazar in the district on early Friday.
Deceased Palash Bairagi, 25, and Bishwajit Baroi, 17, were staff of Gopal Mistanna Bhandar, said Moniruzzaman, Palong police officer-in-charge.
Fire service and police officials said that the fire, originated from Gopal Mistanna Bhandar at about 5:00am, engulfed surrounding areas and burnt more than 15 shops and two houses to the ground.
On information, four firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the flame at about 9:00am while around 20 people received minor injuries.
The injured were given first aid.
Firefighters recovered the victims’ charred bodies after dousing the fire that were sent to Shariatpur General Hospital, Moniruzzaman added.
Shariatpur fire services station officer Abur Rahman said that cause of the fire could not be known immediately.
Abdus Salam Bepari, Palong Bazar traders’ association general secretary, could not confirm estimated loss.
