Hosts Bangladesh booked their place in the Bangabandhu Senior Men’s Asian Central Zone International Volleyball Championship final with a straight 3-0 set win over Maldives in their final group match at the Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium on Monday.
Bangladesh finished second in the five-team table with 10 points from four matches, just one point less than unbeaten group champions Kyrgyzstan.
As per bylaws, the top two teams will now take part in today’s play-off match to decide the title while the third and fourth finishers will play the place-deciding match on the same day.
To ensure the final berth, Bangladesh had no option other than beating Maldives in Monday’s match because if Nepal had defeated Kyrgyzstan in the day’s first match, the scenario would have been different.
But there was no upset as Kyrgyzstan defeated Nepal by 3-1 sets to keep their hundred per cent winning record intact in the championship as well helped the hosts to reach the final.
Bangladesh, took things in their hands to beat the islanders though they had to struggle.
Bangladesh posted a nerve-wracking 30-28 win in the first set but found it easy to win the second set by 25-16 points.
Maldives officered a stiff challenge in the third set in which the margin was locked at 21-21, 22-22, 23-23, 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26 before four consecutive points helped Bangladesh win it by 30-26 points to seal the deal.
