A magistrate in the capital on Monday declined to issue the order to the jail authorities to release acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam even after receiving the High Court Division’s verdict granting him bail.
On Thursday, the High Court Division had granted bail to Shahidul Alam.
Even after receiving the verdict of the High Court Division, the magistrate declined to issue the release order sought by Shahidul Alam’s lawyers, Barristers Sara Hossain and Jyotirmoy Barua on the plea that the government appealed against the verdict of the High Court Division.
Earlier in the day, the government’s appeal was filed but not moved by attorney general Mahbubey Alam in the Appellate Division’s chamber judge.
In the appeal, the government stated that the High Court Division had granted bail to Shahidul Alam without applying its judicial mind.
On August 5, the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police picked up Shahidul Alam from his residence without showing any warrant or even reason.
He was picked within hours of Al Jazeera broadcasting his interview in which he spoke about schoolchildren’s road safety movement.
A case was filed against him with the Ramna police station under the draconian Information and Communication Technology Act, 15 hours after he was picked up.
