Tax fair nets Tk 1,014cr in 3 days

Taxpayers on Thursday continued to throng the income tax fair venues across the country to file tax returns and pay taxes helping National Board of Revenue to bag Tk 1,014 crore in three days of the week-long fair.
NBR received taxes from 1.85 lakh taxpayers who filed their tax returns at the fair venues including the central one set up at Officers’ Club in Dhaka.
In three days of the last year’s fair, NBR had got Tk 985 crore in income tax from 1.10 lakh taxpayers.
Returns submission rose by 68.54 per cent in three days this year while tax collection increased by 3.02 per cent from that of the same period of the previous year.
NBR also got overwhelming responses from taxpayers as a record 6.12 lakh people, up by 54 per cent from last year’s 3.97 lakh people, visited the fair venues at eight divisional cities, Dhaka, Chattogram, Barishal, Khulna, Rangpur, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Mymensingh, and 51 districts and 18 upazillas in the three days.
Some 15,764 people also obtained electronic taxpayers identification numbers.
On the third day alone, NBR got Tk 249 crore in income tax from 74,047 taxpayers while 2.61 lakh people received tax-related services against Tk 233 crore, 39,672 taxpayers and 1.64 lakh people respectively in last year.
Officials of NBR said that they were expecting huge presence of taxpayers on Friday and Saturday, the weekend.
There are 43 booths for returns submission, 31 help desks, 21 booths of Sonali,
Janata and BASIC banks, three booths for e-payment, two for e-filing, 10 for e-TIN and three booths for senior citizens, freedom fighters and physically challenged people and a special corner for female taxpayers at the central venue.
NBR has also arranged shuttle bus services with 15 buses from Uttara, Mirpur, Motijheel, Rampura and TSC in the Dhaka city.
The fair venues will remain open from 9:00am to 5:00pm till November 19.
Fair venues, however, will remain closed from 1pm to 2pm today (Friday) for prayers.
