The ruling Awami League held a prayer session seeking the early recovery of its presidium member and public administration minister Syed Ashraful Islam on Friday afternoon.
The AL general secretary Obaidul Quader was present as the chief guest at the session held at its central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
Among others, Syed Ashraful Islam’s younger brother Major General (retd) Syed Shafaetul Islam, AL joint general secretaries Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif and Jahangir Kabir Nanok, organising secretaries Ahmed Hossain and AKM Enamul Haque Shameem, and office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap were present on the occasion.
The party also held similar programmes at the metropolitan, district, upazila and union levels across the country for the early recovery of Syed Ashraful Islam.
Syed Ashraful Islam, also former general secretary of the AL, was undergoing treatment at Bangkok in Thailand.
Wishing early recover of Syed Ashraf, road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader said, ‘It is a matter of sorrow that a brilliant politician like Syed Ashraful Islam has been suffering from prolonged sickness at a crucial moment ahead of the 11th parliamentary elections. We are now feeling his absence as he is a member of the parliamentary board of the AL.’
He also said, ‘Syed Ashraful Islam has served the AL as general secretary twice with dedication and honesty.’
The presence of a large number of leaders and activists at the programme at a short notice was proof of Asraf’s popularity in the party, he added.
