A suspected leader of a faction of the banned Purba Banglar Communist Party was killed in a gunfight with police in Kuthi Pachuria area in Rajbari Sadar upazila early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Ali Sheikh, 38, son of Wahab Ali of village Dayalbandhu in Rajbari Sadar upazila.
The police said Mohammad Ali was a leader of the Red Flag faction of the PBCP and had been wanted in at least four cases filed over various charges, including charges of murder, abduction and extortion.
Tipped off that a group of miscreants had gathered in Kuthi Pachuria area, a police team went to raid the place, said officer-in-charge of the Detective Branch in Rajbari Kamal Hossain Bhuiyan.
When the cops reached the area at about 1:30am, the suspected miscreants opened fire on them, causing them to fire back.
As the gunfight ended and the other miscreants escaped, the police rescued Mohammad Ali who had been shot and rushed him to Rajbari Sadar Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead.
The police also claimed they had seized one pistol, one gun and five bullets from the scene of the gunfight.
