The High Court Division on Thursday directed the government to inform it on Sunday whether facilities were available at Rangpur Medical College Hospital or the Rangpur Central Jail to screen health of detained Supreme Court lawyer and former MP Mainul Hosein.
A bench of Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir asked deputy attorney general Kazi Zinat Haque to provide the information at the next hearing of a Saju Hosein’s writ petition on Sunday.
In the writ petition Mainul’s wife Saju Hosein sought directives to the authorities to get him admitted in a specialized hospital for his cardiac treatment.
On Sunday, the bench would also hear her 2nd writ petition seeking directives to the authorities to ensure his safety and security at courts.
Saju Hosein filed both the writ petitions on Wednesday.
Thursday’s hearing was adjourned by the bench as the deputy attorney general prayed for time for the attorney general so that he could appear in the next hearing.
The bench also directed Mainul’s lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain to ‘explore avenues’ by which the concerned magistracy may oversee the process of such screening or examination, and administering of proper medical care.
Khandker Mahbub submitted that his client’s health was deteriorating since November 5 when hundreds of leaders and activists of ruling Awami League and its front organisations, including Bangladesh Chattra League and Swechchhasebok League attacked him in presence of police who were escorting him to the court in Rangpur.
He submitted that in last 20 days 22 defamation cases had been filed against Mainul at different places of the country mostly by AL leaders and activists alleging that he had defamed journalist Masuda Bhatti by calling her ‘characterless’ at a TV talk show on October 16.
On October 22, an NGO activist in Rangpur filed a defamation case with the Rangpur Court against him. On the same day, an additional chief judicial magistrate of Rangpur issued the warrant and within hours Mainul was arrested in the capital at night.
