An activist of a faction of United People’s Democratic Front was shot dead by unidentified assailants at his village home at village Bara Adam under Dighinala upazila in Khagrachhari early Friday.
The deceased, Sumanta Chakma alias Sukendu Chakma, 28, son of Shanti Bikash Chakma, was an activist of UPDF (democratic), a Chattogram Hill Tracts-based political organisation, police said.
Uttam Chandra Deb, officer-in-charge of Dighinala Police Station, said a group of miscreants stormed into the house of Sumanta about 4:30am and opened fire on him, leaving him dead on the spot.
Sumanta might have been killed in a rivalry over establishing supremacy, he said.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to local hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.
Dighinala upazila unit UPDF (democratic) organiser Pronoy Bikash Chakma blamed the armed ‘miscreants’ of UPDF for killing Sumanta.
The Khagrachari district unit UPDF organiser Michel Chakma denied the allegation and alleged that Sumanta might have been killed in the internal rivalry.
