An arson attack on Tuesday left the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Sirajganj district unit office burnt and damaged, local BNP leaders said alleging the ruling Awami League for the attack.
BNP’s district unit general secretary Saidur Rahman Bacchu complained that some AL activists attacked the office and set fire to it at 11:00am. Some neighbouring houses were also damaged, he said.
AL district unit’s acting general secretary and lawmaker from Sirajganj-2 constituency Habib-e-Millat denied BNP leaders’ allegation.
He rather said that BNP supporters protesting at seven-year jail term of their chairperson Khaleda Zia hurled petrol bombs to some AL leaders on Monday. Following the BNP attack, AL supporters staged peaceful protests next day.
BNP leader Bacchu also denied Millat’s allegation.
Siranjgaj sadar police station’s inspector (operation) Nurul Islam said police personnel were deployed in the area to avert further unrest.
