Three BCL men in jail for mugging at DU

A Dhaka court has sent three activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League to jail on charge of mugging on Dhaka University campus.

The three were produced before the court on Wednesday and it sent them to jail.

Police arrested three activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on charge of mugging on Dhaka University campus, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police station confirmed on Thursday.

Abul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police station, said one Anwar Hossain filed a case against four people for snatching money cash amount and expensive mobile phone and police arrested three of them.

The accused are Nafiur Rahman, executive committee member of Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall unit of Chhatra Leageu and a student of communication disorder department, Chhara League activists of the same unit Kamrul Hsan and Minharul Bashar Abir, and Bijay Ekattar Hall unit Chhatra League committee member George. All of them are sophomores at the university.      

Among them George managed to flee.

In the first information report, Anwar Hossain, organising secretary of ward 49 unit Bangabandhu Parishad and a contractor, the accused had waylaid him in front of Ramna Kali Mandir and took away Tk 17,000 and a Samsung J-2 Mobile phone.

‘They also forced him to get onto a rickshaw and as it reached TSC crossing, I began shouting and police came forward to help me. They picked up three and others including George managed to flee,’ he said in the FIR.    

The university proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said mugging does go with a student. ‘Actions will be taken on the basis of evidence,’ he said.  

Among the arrested, Abir belongs to a faction led by Rifat Uddin, an aspirant for the position of president or general secretary of Zahurul Huq Hall unit Chhatra League.

Rifat said Abir belongs to his faction and former hall unit general secretary Asif Talukder and had provided Abir to his faction. ‘I will not take responsibility of his acts,’ said Rifat.    

The university unit Chhatra League general secretary Sanjit Chandra Das said there is no room for any criminal in Chhatra League. ‘Organisational actions will be taken against them,’ he said.
