Young off-spinner Nayeem Hasan gave the selectors a timely reminder by picking up eight wickets in an innings on the opening day of National Cricket League fourth round that got underway in four venues across the country on Monday.
Nayeem, who was in the Bangladesh Test squad for the last home series against Sri Lanka but did not play, picked up 8-106 as Chattogram bowled out Dhaka for 288 runs in their first innings at Cox’s Bazar.
Soumya Sarkar and Tushar Imran also continued their good from as both of them hit half-centuries to guide hosts Khulna to 281-7 against Rajshahi at stumps on the first day at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium.
Elsewhere in Rangpur, Sohag Gazi’s 5-40 helped Barisal bowled out the home side for 147 before reaching 35-2 at stumps.
Dhaka v Chattogram
Fresh from his nine-wicket haul in the previous game, Nayeem rattled Dhaka with regular strikes at the Sheikh Kamal International Stadium, despite the visitors making a strong start with 82-run opening stand.
After Shakhawat Hossain broke the partnership by dismissing Saif Hasan (41) Nayeem took the control of the game by taking eight of the remaining nine wickets. Abdul Mazid and Shuvagata Home provided some resistance by making 71 and 57 runs respectively.
Khulna v Rajshahi
Opener Anamul Haque made 56 runs before one-down Soumya hit 66, his third consecutive fifty in NCL to give Khulna a solid start. Tushar Imran used the platform to score 71, adding pressure on selectors to pick him for Zimbabwe Tests.
Sunzamul Islam claimed 3-73 for Rajshahi.
Barishal v Rangpur
At the Cricket Garden in Rangpur, Rakin Islam made 46 and Naeem Islam added 39 but the home side could not gather more than 147 runs before they were all out in 74 overs. Sohag did much of the damage with his off-spin while Monir Hossain bagged 2-11.
Subashis Roy struck back for Rangpur, picking up two quick wickets as the home side reduced Barishal 2-35 at stumps.
Sylhet v Dhaka Metro
Opener Shahnaj Ahmed made 60 and one-down Zakir Hasan added 50 to give Sylhet a good start against Dhaka Metropolis at Rajshahi as they reached 292-9 at close. Shahnir Rahman was the other notable run-getter with 54.
Qazi Anik, Arafat Sunny and Mohammad Ashraful claimed two wickets each for Dhaka Metro.
